Music Therapy Sessions

Celeste S. Sanchez, music therapist with PWD participant

Divine Mercy Mobile Center, is conducting round of FREE Music and Arts Therapy session and the beneficiary are the children of CBR-S.M.I.L.E. (Comunity Based Rehabilitation- Samahan ng mga Magulang na Iniingatan ang Lahat na mga Batang Espesyal) of Payatas, Quezon City. Students ages 5 to 16 will undergo therapy session under the direct supervision of Banal na Awa President, a renowned Philippine Music Therapist Ms. Celeste Sanchez. The first session which started on October 20^th will end on November 10, 2015. The Rotary Club of Ramon of Magsaysay (RCRM) District 3810 headed by President Leo Vedan with the support of Rotary Club of Parramatta City donated tables and chairs and will provide transportation expense for the participating PWD students and parents.

Divine Mercy Mobile Center, an association dedicated for persons with special needs under Banal na Awa, Gawaing Awa Inc. has been in the forefront of promoting the use of Music Therapy in the Philippines for more than two decades. The integration of music to reinforce positive changes in one’s behavior is proven clinically effective in addressing the mental, physical, psychological, social and spiritual condition of person who undergoes the therapy. Development of speech and decrease in hyperactive behavior are some of the major benefits of Music Therapy. Students do not require specific music ability and it is suitable for all ages, with or without special needs.

Persons with Disabilities (PWD) play significant role in the growth of community and society surrounding them. Unfortunately, many still disregard this fact. This negation drives Banal na Awa VP, Boi Carandang to take further leap by providing livelihood programs to adult and parents of young PWDs. The project seeks to develop the entrepreneurial skills and encourage pro-active participation of both PWDs and their families leading to realistic long-term advantage.

The programs and services will center Information Technology, Arts and Crafts and Print Publishing. PWD participants are assessed based on demonstrated competence. Training will also be given by volunteer professionals to meet the needs for improvement of every member. As a non-profit organization, its sustainability depends on people and institution that can wholeheartedly give their time. You can become one of our partners in doing this endeavor. The first speaker Monette Rafols, a Psychologist who talked on Psychology and Music. She explained how Music is used in the Psychology program.

The second speaker Maricar Sanchez-Magallanes talked on the Music Therapy for all ages with demonstration using music for each categories – fetus, infants, children, high school and college students, Adults and Senior Citizens.

The Third Speaker, Celeste S. Sanchez, gave the areas covered by Music Therapy – physical, emotional, psychosocial, intellectual and spiritual. She invited the Special Children present and together with her daughter, Maricar, applied the Music and techniques for each categories and demonstrated the application of Music Therapy for each special cases.

Celeste S. Sanchez, our Music Therapist was invited in Taipei, Taiwan as a guest speaker in the "2014 Music Therapy Conference in Asia" last November 8 and 9 2014.

Her talk was entitled " The Role of Music Therapy in Wellness and Preventive Health Care."  

She also submitted an essay on "Development and Application of Music Therapy in Brain Development and Mental Health."

The conference theme was "Eastern and Western Music Therapy and Pythagoras, the Lambdoma Music Therapy." It was held in Christian Youth Activity Center, Cyun ying Hall.

MRS. CELESTE S. SANCHEZ CONDUCTS WORKSHOP TO JAPANESE MUSIC THERAPISTS

Music Therapists from the Tokyo International College of Music Therapy came to Cebu, Philippines to participate in a two-day Music Therapy activity in the Philippines. It was held last March 11 – 12, 2013 at the SME Capital Campus. The activity was part of the school’s  study trip outside Japan in their desire to study music therapy in the Philippines. The delegation was headed by the principal of the school, Harobumi Kanno and was joined by Erica Watanabe, Nanako Yumita, Nahoko Yoshimura, Noriko Katagiri, Izumi Katsuragi.

In Cebu, they were met by the mother of Music Therapy in the Philippines, Celeste S. Sanchez and her daughter, Maria Socorro S. Nuyda, EdD. The workshop started with an overview of Music Therapy in the Philippines and was followed by a demonstration of typical music therapy activities conducted in Japan. The objective of the activity was to prepare the students for their performance to persons with disabilities (PWDs) in selected schools in Cebu for the following day.

The Music Therapists showcased their Japanese culture through songs, dances and visuals. They beamed with pride when they rendered traditional Japanese music, one of which is the celebrated “Sakura”.

The demonstration was followed by the “critique” given by Mrs. Sanchez, which focused on establishing contact with PWDs.

On the second day, the delegation performed and conducted music therapy sessions; much to the delight of the children in a selected orphanage in Cebu City.

The day culminated with another performance of music therapy activities to the visually-impaired students of Cebu Normal College. In return, the students delighted the Japanese delegation with a song and dance number. The afternoon ended with a debriefing of the Japanese music therapists with Mrs Sanchez.

Generally, the two-day sessions were very productive and enriching experience for both parties. The collaboration was made possible by Mr Tomohide Suzuki, Director of Achieve Goal Co., Ltd.

My Special Child...

All children are special to the hearts of every parent. Everyone needs attention but, some need extra special attention!  I want to impart to all of you a lot of memories we have with our special son but I know, a day will not be enough to share with you all the details.

When I got pregnant, I told myself that I want to personally attend to our children’s needs. Not knowing there will really be a need to do so.   I believe that it happened not because of just my wanting but because of the Divine intervention from above.

If not for the guidance, it will be late for us to notice something with our child’s behaviors. Luckily those behaviors were only his being hyperactive, delayed speech and no eye contact.  Other than those things, he is a very fine boy. Witty did I say that?  For us his family, our son is special not because of the things he cannot do but because of the things that he does that even us regular adults ignore or may I say those things that really don’t matter to us!

I’ll share with you some of the things that counts a lot.  There’s this one time that I had to do an errand and our son was sick.  My mother-in-law  has to pitch in for me.  While I was away, his grandmother, seated on the floor, fed him.  When suddenly he stood up and ran to the playroom.  When he went back he was carrying a small stool and he pulled his lola up.  Pointing to the stool, he then pulled her down to sit.  He can’t talk much yet at that time, but this little child with his little mind suffering from a high fever had all the strength to think of the comfort to give his grandmother.  Tears flowed from my mother-in-law’s eyes.

My husband and I  will always cherish every moment we have with him.  He started to communicate when he was three years old.  He always ask us to hug him before he sleeps.  He doesn’t forget praying and he often reminds us who will lead the prayer.  He is so compassionate to poor children. He always tells her sister that they are lucky to have food to eat and toys to play with and that they should share.  Upon learning that I am pregnant with our third child, our son is so conscious that he was to be careful.  He never misses to kiss my growing stomach before leaving the house and before retiring at night.  With his innocence, he told me one time that he will take care of our coming baby by teaching him/her to play the Gameboy and playstation!  He keeps on counting the days and months to keep track on the baby’s birth.  Simple things, simple mind but with a big heart and sincerity, that’s what makes him special!

Barely after a month learning how to communicate spontaneously, he learned to read, spell and do mathematics.  The music followed.  Both sides of our family have the inclination to music.  That is why we were not surprised when one day we heard someone playing a birthday song in the piano.  Our son was playing it.  I was so happy the long awaited plan to let him learn to play the piano came without pressuring him.  I then ask for referrals and the name Mrs. Celeste Sanchez was number one in the list.  We tried and after the fifth session, our son can already read notes.  My son improved all the more.  Maybe music is really in his heart that makes him connect to the world.  Music also helps him express himself through the melody and rhythm of every piece that he plays.  Music is also one special bonding moment in our family.  My husband plays the piano with him. especially when  reading the note come in.  I play with him only through ouido.

Everything is falling into place. Next school year our son will be entering the regular school.  With all hopes and so much faith in god, I do believe everything will be in its proper perspective. For as long as there’s love, care and for accepting for what he is, I know our son will always be surviving no matter what.

To all the people who touched our son’s life, to the teachers, therapists, doctors, to our loyal household helpers and to the members of our family, thank you very much.  To my mother, who I know that even in another life somehow helped me and guided me down here to raise my children in the way that  she will be doing if she was still alive. You will forever stay special in our son’s life!

A Music Therapy seminar workshop for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Elderly, Sick and the Dying was held at the Paco Catholic School last June 30, 2012 and it was sponsored by the Catholic Handicapped led by Fr Luke Moortgat, CICM.

The Music Therapy Seminar Workshop was attended by a good number of crowds from the community of the PWDs, caregivers, elderly, parents, therapists, students and church volunteers.

The Participants had a great time learning what music Therapy is in a lively manner. Interaction was encouraged by the Speakers of the Music Therapy Seminar Workshop led by Celeste S. Sanchez and Maricar S. Magallanes, her daughter, Music therapists from the Divine Mercy Mobile Center of Music and Arts Therapy for Special Children, Adults and Seniors.

It was sponsored by the Catholic Handicapped Development headed by Fr. Luke Moortgat. It was attended by handicapped children and adults, parents, therapists, students and church volunteers.

The workshop seminar in general is about Music as Therapy and the benefits of Music Therapy.

The areas covered by Music Therapy were explained and demonstrated with Music as to what are the music used in Music Therapy, the appropriate songs to be used to aid in the Music Therapy session as a healing tool. 

The recommended Music Demo workshop session for each age level were sung and choreographed by Yolly Mapa, Peachy Tayao and Viron Delima.

According to the participants the seminar is indeed a realization how Music Therapy can make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities, the elderly, the sick and the Dying. They learned what Music Therapy is all 
about with a deeper knowledge as they themselves felt the effects of Music Therapy during the seminar workshop. 

The audience participated with the special children in the physical activities, singing and    instruments playing like the musical Bells, Tambourine, triangle, drums and others.

A special sharing in the workshop were services for the sick and dying to complement the Bishop's approved Commission for the Handicapped, Elderly, Sick and Dying.

MUSIC THERAPY GOES TO INDONESIA

Counseling care Nusantara (Pelikan) and Counseling Program recently sponsored the seminar, Jaffray Care Net Counseling XVI 18-19 on May 2012 at Hotel Ciputra, Jarkarta. The focus is on issues that revolve around the theme of "Harmonization of Family Education System with the School and the Church".

Music Therapy Seminar Workshop Guest Speakers and Organizers 

Music Therapy was one of the sessions featured in the seminar. Speakers were Mrs. Celeste Sanchez, Music Therapist from the Philippines. She was assisted by her daughters, Maricar Sanchez-Magallanes, Music Therapist and Mariciel Sanchez-Nuyda, EdD. In attendance were Guidance Counselors, parents and teachers. The objective of the seminar was to raise the awareness of the participants on the benefits of Music Therapy.

The morning session focused on Music Therapy concepts while the afternoon session was a Music Therapy workshop. The participants were made to experience different Music Therapy activities that could enhance the physical, psycho-social, emotional, psychological, intellectual and spiritual dimensions of the child.

The highlight of the activity was an impromptu presentation by three children with special needs. The seminar participants were delighted by the obvious joy and pride that the children have shown as they played the piano.

The seminar closed with the community singing the song, Give Thanks.
